Have you ever stopped to ponder God’s creative ability? Aside from the fact that Jesus (God in the flesh) came to earth to save us from our sins, the second most awesome subject in scripture is God’s creativeness. Everything from the vast expanse of outer space down to the most intricate sub-atomic detail was thought about, processed, and ultimately created by God.
Genesis 1:1-2 states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep…” (ESV)
And again in Hebrews 11:3, “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (ESV)
Thus begins God’s love story. Out of nothing He created everything around us and then He created us: the human race. He caused us to “be” not for a good laugh or as a side experiment but as His Crown-Jewel: to have deep relationships both with Him and with each other… and to create.
About a month ago, I asked God to show me His wonder. The answer came that morning when I opened my kitchen window blinds and saw everything: the ground, roads, trees all covered with snow. Frustrated, I set out to start shoveling. While plowing away on my back porch… it happened. I glanced over at my covered grill and noticed the barrage of white flakes scattered against the black canvas backdrop. I put down my shovel and began to look more closely at the individual snowflakes. In awe, I scanned the intricate, unique designs that lay before me. While reveling in God’s artwork, I turned to gaze across the field and saw millions (maybe billions) of unique snowflakes randomly and quietly falling from the sky to the ground… and the snow cover was already 5 inches deep! The following verse came to mind: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful…” Psalm 139:14 (NIV)
God is amazingly creative… here’s the crazy thing: He has made us to be amazingly creative too. The architect, the builder, and the owner of all things… including snowflakes… and us humans… designed us to be creative!
Think about how creative you have been just today:
Did you put on make-up and pick out clothes to wear? You are creative!
Did you design a breakfast and mix items together to eat? You are creative!
Have you weaved in and out of traffic today? You are creative!
Did you show love to someone that you care about? You are creative!
Did you tell a story or share a thought that inspired? You are creative!
Powerful, huh? God gave you these everyday abilities (and millions more) that we share with each other every single day… yet we forget how special these gifts are. We dismiss them and think that (somehow) God doesn’t care about us or that we are less special than those around us.
But you are special… God created you unique and loves you more than you can possibly imagine. God gave creative ability to each one of us so that we “would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him. Though He is not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:27 (NIV)
You are His finest creation.
